Established in 1996 by Architect Timothy J. Gallagher, Architex is a dynamic planning and design firm located in the heart of the Capital Region. We design and construct building projects throughout New York State that integrate the latest in building science, performance, technology, and energy efficiency. Architex offers a full and diverse range of professional services selected to meet the unique requirements of your project.
Finding and selecting the “right” architect for your project involves careful research and thoughtful consideration. Our clients quickly recognize that all architects and designers are not the same. Talent, experience, customer service, attention to detail, and the ability to communicate effectively vary greatly in our industry. Architex has established a reputation of success among clients and builders for developing uniquely creative and cost-effective solutions for a variety of residential and commercial building projects.
Our design solutions can significantly improve the appearance, flow and function of your home or business. This includes a growing emphasis on “green”—environmentally responsible—building design and construction techniques. In planning and designing for our clients’ needs and desires, our commitment to excellence is genuine, not our own ego-driven ideas. We use our talents to develop a tailored solution that accommodates your current and future needs, and considers cost/budget limitations at each phase of work. Our greatest asset is our communication skills; we listen and coordinate in an efficient and timely manner, helping you make well-educated decisions. See our ad on page 38.

Maybe it is the economy. Maybe it is the weather in the Northeast. Maybe it is a cultural shift as Baby Boomers’ age. Maybe it is the appeal of the cocktail parties on “Mad Men” or the dinner parties on the Food Network.
Whatever the reason, home entertaining is back.  And that trend is reflected in how people design or redesign their houses. Kitchens are larger, with more creative work spaces, including spacious islands.  Home bars are springing up near swimming pools or next to big screen TVs perfect for watching the big game.
And whether you want your friends and family to gather around an island in your kitchen or a bar in your basement, The Alexander Cos. have you covered!
Wood is all important. While there are hundreds of varieties, not all are suitable for countertops and bars. In most cases, your best bet is a very hard wood with a tight grain.  Woods with an open grain tend to absorb a lot of moisture, and soft woods dent easily. Even a child doing homework at the island could leave marks.
Use hard woods for utilitarian countertops.  The best woods for this purpose include maple, hickory, and an exotic wood called Jatoba, or Brazilian cherry. A broader range of woods may be used for bars or countertops that will be lacquered and treated as furniture, rather than cutting boards. See our ad on page 43.

GNH Design Showcase
898 New Loudon Road, Latham
313.1229;
www.gnhLumber.com
In 1937, GNH founders Stanley L. Ingalls and James M. Freeman started the Greenville Norton Hill Lumber Co. providing lumber, building materials and coal in the product line.  GNH Lumber, as it became known, acquired and opened stores in Windham and Coxsackie, becoming a superb resource center for contractors and homeowners. The business helped facilitate the process of remodeling and building new additions, garages, and homes and also added a full-time draftsman and estimator to draft customer plans and provide detailed estimate for projects.
Decades and four Ingalls generations later, GNH opened its latest location in 2013 at 898 New Loudon Road in Latham. It’s not the typical GNH retail store.
GNH Design Showcase features Marvin & Integrity Windows and Doors, Therma Tru Entry Doors, and Emtek hardware for homeowners and contractors alike.  An install program with free In-home consultation and measure also is offered. A beautiful 4500-square-foot showroom displays over 50 Marvin & Integrity Windows and Doors, installed in full size wall displays.  This gives the homeowners a true visual of the product and allows for hands-on operation.
The Kitchen and Bath Design Center includes all the top brands from MasterBrand Cabinetry, such as Omega, Kemper, Embassy, and more.  The experienced and friendly designers have a strong talent for listening to what their customers want, and delivering on it.
Today, this closely-knit family-owned business is stronger than ever, providing the project supplies people and their communities need with the personalized customer service they’ve come to associate with GNH. See our ad on page 42.

N-Hance Revolutionary Wood Renewal of Upper Hudson NY

www.nhance.com/burlington/
N-Hance Revolutionary Wood Renewal of Upper Hudson NY offers a wood floor and cabinet renewal system that produces like-new luster without the waste, mess, overwhelming chemicals or expense of traditional sanding and refinishing.  This gives homeowners new options for floor and cabinet renewal. N-Hance can renew your floors, cabinets, railings, stairs, furniture or any wood product in 1-5 days.
Cabinet refinishing is typically one-third to one-fifth of the cost of re-facing or replacing cabinets. Homeowners can look forward to home remodeling projects with no dust or mess and no noxious fumes because N-Hance uses a proprietary process and product line that requires no sanding and a quick dry time.
“One advantage that really sets us apart from our competitors is that we can, in many cases, begin a wood renewal process when the customer goes to work in the morning and have it completed by the time they get home,” said Kevin Knobloch, owner. “Homeowners are always amazed at the quality of the results accomplished in such a short amount of time.
“In addition to the cost, time and convenience of N-Hance’s services, there is also a ‘green’ aspect. Homeowners who choose to renew and preserve their wood surfaces with N-Hance instead of refacing or replacing them can feel good knowing that they are choosing a path of conservation – saving trees and the landfill.”

Redbud Development
2 Commerce Park Drive, Wilton
691.0428;
redbuddevelopment.com
Redbud Development. is a landscape construction company specializing in the custom design and quality installation of residential improvement and development projects. With a creative and collaborative approach, we help clients imagine and build exterior environments that connect seamlessly with the interior and reflect their personality and lifestyle.
Fall is all about color. It is almost as if we forget about color for 3 seasons and then, in Fall, we realize how magnificent the world around us really is and it is all due to the changing colors of the trees. Color also is a quick and easy way to freshen up a space, even on the exterior of your home. A simple change to the accent color or stain on the front door, garage door or even just the shutters can have a significant impact on the curb appeal of your house. It is a similar effect to having an asphalt driveway re-sealed; it deepens the color and draws the eye right to it. But perhaps the easiest way to revitalize the exterior in Fall is by planting mums or creating a seasonal display with cornstalks and pumpkins.
If you are contemplating a larger more permanent improvement project such as an addition or replacing hardscape materials, please, please remember that color (and texture) should still adhere to the Rule of Three in design—information and objects that appear in threes are more appealing, memorable, and effective than other numbers of objects. It is no coincidence that Color Theory is also based on a three-part color wheel that guides us to visual harmony; too few colors is boring but too many colors is chaotic and messy. And since home improvement projects are, more often than not, done piece-meal and over time, it is important to take a step back and look at the whole to ensure that the full scope of work is synchronized. Checklist for finding and hiring a builder or remodeler
Fall is a great time for making home improvements and planning winter projects. Contrary to popular perception, most phases of home construction can happen year-round. So take advantage of the greater builder/remodeler availability during the upcoming winter months. Seek out the right professional with the following in mind:
• Does the builder/remodeler maintain a permanent mailing address, email address, published telephone number, and web site? These are good indicators of financial stability, longevity, community presence, and accessibility.
• How long has the builder/remodeler been in business? It usually takes several years to establish a fiscally sound business and a solid reputation with banks, suppliers, and trade partners, not to mention a robust portfolio of successful projects.
• Has the builder/remodeler received positive reviews from other homeowners? Check online review sites such as Yelp, Manta, and Angie’s List. Look for social buzz on Facebook and Twitter. Get referrals from friends, family, and co-workers. Ask the builder/remodeler for references and then pursue them!
• Does the builder/remodeler have adequate workers’ compensation and general liability insurance? If not, you may be liable for any construction-related accidents on your premises.
• Ask to see both completed and in-progress work. Check for quality of workmanship, materials, and jobsite condition.
• Can you communicate easily with the builder/remodeler? Open communication and mutual trust are crucial to a successful project and process.
• Get a complete and clearly written contract.
• Beware of unusually low-priced bids. “Bargain” doesn’t necessarily mean “better” when investing in your home.
