Davey Trees
Even the most beautiful trees may have structural issues that aren’t readily visible. These can become a liability if they aren’t properly addressed, putting both people and property in harm’s way. Some common hazardous tree conditions include:

Poor architecture – The tree leans excessively, or certain branches bow out of proportion with the rest of the tree crown.

Dead/decaying wood – This can fall at any time.

Cracks – Deep splits in the bark can extend into the wood and increase the risk of tree failure.

Weak branch unions – Branches grow too close to one another, and the bark growing between them isn’t strong enough to hold them together.

Root problems – Without a strong root system, trees aren’t securely anchored.

Heavy canopies – If the upper layer of branches and foliage gets too thick, trees can catch more wind during stormy weather. This increases the risk of branch breakage and partial uprooting.

Davey Tree’s Certified Arborists watch for conditions like these during our visits to your property. If we find that hazardous conditions exist, we will provide you with a recommended course of action. As always, feel free to give Davey Tree a call with any questions regarding your landscape. We’re here to keep your trees as safe, healthy and beautiful as possible.

Summertime energy-saving tips from NYSERDA

Keeping cool and saving energy this summer is as easy as looking out your window.

  • Shade keeps things cool. Put your air conditioning unit in a shady spot, if you can, and you’ll use up to 10 percent less electricity than the same unit operating in the sun. Don’t forget to change the filter monthly, too. A dirty filter can increase energy use and damage the air conditioner, leading to early failures.
  • Bring pleasant breezes inside with ENERGY STAR®-qualified ceiling fans. They can help cool a home and improve airflow without greatly increasing electricity use.
  • Take advantage of changes in temperature. When it’s cooler outside, use your oven, washing machine, dryer and dishwasher. Running these appliances in the early morning or later at night will keep things from heating up inside.
  • Use a barbeque for cooking outside to keep from heating up the indoors. Or for outdoor kitchens and lighting, use ENERGY STAR appliances to increase efficiency and savings.
  • Block out heat from the sun’s rays by keeping blinds or curtains closed during the day, especially on south facing windows.
  • Install a rain barrel to collect water from your gutters on rainy days, so you can use it in dry weather to water plants.

East Greenbush Window Coverings & Home Interiors

Since 1987, East Greenbush Window Coverings & Home Interiors has been under the direction of owner Lorraine Greaney. Lorraine is well-known in the Capital Region for her extensive work in both residential interiors and in the commercial industry which supplies and installs window coverings for business offices, state agencies, health care facilities and schools.
In 2008, she moved the design studio to its current location on Columbia Turnpike in East Greenbush. The move was designed to create a “boutique-like” showroom that would showcase the residential interior design side of the company. The extensive fabric and trim library is not only a wonderful resource for the designer, it is also a comfortable area to meet with clients. East Greenbush Window Coverings is a Showcase Dealer for Hunter Douglas; as a result they can offer the exclusive Alustra Collection along with all the other wonderful Hunter Douglas family of products.

The concept was to create a one-stop shop where a client can come into the showroom, sit down with a designer and come up with a sensible design plan in a comfortable and friendly atmosphere.

“Whether our clients are selecting one shade or planning a full-room makeover, our intention is to provide the best service and individual attention,” said Lorraine.
We invite you to call or stop in and see our extensive resources for drapery, re-upholstery, custom bedding and more. East Greenbush Window Coverings is a NYS Certified Woman Owned Business.

East Greenbush Window Coverings is located at 568 Columbia Turnpike, Suite 8B, East Greenbush. For more information call 477.9025 or visit www.eastgreenbushwindowcoverings.com

Teakwood Builders
Beyond the low bid: The intangible value of hiring the best remodeler
An early astronaut, sitting atop tons of equipment and explosive fuel just before liftoff, is known to have remarked: “I am sitting here, about to be launched on this great adventure, and the thought crosses my mind that my life depends on all this stuff being provided by the lowest bidder!”

While it may make sense to shop based on price for a known commodity like a car or cell phone, think twice before opting for the lowest bid when hiring a contractor to make improvements to your home, because cost is just one of many factors to consider when entrusting one of your most significant investments to a remodeling professional.

When hiring a contractor, you are paying for more than a set of installed products. You are hiring a professional for his or her specialized experience in design, building codes, engineering principles, safety and security issues, and perhaps knowledge of historical structures. You are hiring someone who can effectively schedule and manage trade contractors, ensuring that their work is completed timely and meets the highest quality standards. You are partnering with someone you trust to protect your home and what you value in it, and to guide your remodeling project with skill, sensitivity to budget and a respect and understanding of your vision.

Can you find this sort of professional in the contractor who gives you the least expensive estimate for your project? Perhaps. But more often than not, the adage “you get what you pay for” proves true. So look beyond the low bid for those intangible–and priceless–qualities in the remodeling professional you choose.

Teakwood Builders is an award-winning, full-service design/build company specializing in custom home building and remodeling for over 15 years. We are located at 8 Butler Place in Saratoga Springs.
