Cheryl Burack, M.D.
Hackett Blvd. Albany, 465.3318
2231 Burdett Ave. Troy, 272.4231

Earning the "Best Doctor" award for two consecutive years is an honor few achieve. To Dr. Burack, this is especially meaningful and she is most appreciative.

With offices in both Albany and Troy, Dr. Burack, a board certified physician, provides comprehensive care to her patients in obstetrics, gynecology, family planning, menopausal medicine and infertility. Patients frequently express their appreciation for the personal attention and priority Dr. Burack offers them. To quote a patient, "She always makes me feel welcome and really listens to my concerns."

Dr. Burack grew up in Boston and always knew she wanted to be a physician. She did her undergraduate work at Tufts University, medical training at Albany Medical College and her residency in OB/GYN at Albany Medical Center. Early in her studies she was interested in medical oncology and did research in this area in Boston. In her third year of medical school, however, her focus changed when she did a rotation in OB/GYN. Finding a specialty that allows her to practice both medicine and surgery was a big attraction, but throw in the opportunity to be exposed to the miracle of childbirth and she was sold.

"I love the changing nature of this field, the ability to provide care to women across the lifespan, and particularly the chance to build long lasting therapeutic relationships with my patients. On any given day I might be in the OR, then at the office, and later end up delivering a baby. What more could I ask for in a career?"

Dr. Burack was recently elected section chair for District II of The American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. She was chosen by her colleagues to represent their interests and serve as a liaison between local physicians and their national group.

She has been a partner with Edward J. Jacobs, M.D., Sean Y. Lee, M.D. and Cheryl B. Burack, M.D., P.C. for the past 14 years and she welcomes new patients. Dr. Burack thanks Capital Region Living Magazine for this honor.

Dr. Gerald Hausler, CPO
8 Century Hill Drive, Latham

Dr. Gerald Hausler could not imagine being anything other than a family physician. The Albany native, a graduate of the Milne School, attended Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine after receiving his bachelor’s degree from RPI. He completed his residency at Wayne State University in Detroit where he was chief resident. He subsequently moved back to the community to teach at the family practice residency at Albany Medical College and continues to enjoy teaching students. He was drawn to family practice as the ideal way to help the entire patient, as well as the general community.

Located at 8 Century Hill Drive in Latham, the new building has the latest in equipment, but the most important part of the practice is the staff. The majority of staff has been together almost 20 years; this enables them to have a close working and personal relationship, which helps the patient continuity. The staff is well-trained, caring and professional. There are two surgical suites, allowing them to do small office surgical procedures, as well as emergent care. Other services include digital X-ray and bone density and ultrasonography.

Family practice treats the entire family, from newborn to geriatric. It looks at the person as a whole, not just as an illness or disease. There is a focus on prevention and wellness, as well as continuity of care. The practice is now treating third and fourth generation family members.

Charles Friedlander RPA-C and Jacquelyn McLean-Bennett D.O. round out the professional staff. Most insurances are accepted, and same day appointments are available. Please call 783.7173 to schedule an appointment.

Dr. Keith Edwards
MS Center of Northeastern New York
Riverhill Center Suite 105
1205 Troy-Schenectady Road, Latham

In 30 years of Multiple Sclerosis research, evaluation and treatment, Dr. Keith Edwards has seen remarkable strides in efforts to find the cause of and cure for the disease. More remarkable, he says, are the strides made by individual patients.

"My patients are my heroes. Each day my patients do battle with the disease, and each day my patients are winning that battle," Edwards said.

Multiple Sclerosis, an autoimmune disease, is a chronic neurological disorder of the central nervous system. The main target of this immune attack is the myelin covering over the axions (part of the neuron or nerve cells), that are used to transmit information to other nerve cells. Neurological signs typical of Multiple Sclerosis occur when there is a breakdown of myelin. There is no known cure for MS.

Dr. Edwards has been involved in research in neurotransmitters sponsored by the NIH (National Institutes of Health), National MS Society grants in genetic research, individual research grants in cognitive disorders associated with MS and multicenter treatment trials. Recently, he was awarded a research grant for CSF evaluation in the field of neuroregeneration.

In 2008, Dr. Edwards and an experienced staff that has worked with him an average of 10 years were instrumental in creation of the MS Center of Northeastern New York. Dr. William Goodman, a neuro-psychologist with special interest and knowledge in cognitive and emotional problems associated with MS, is an important part of the MS Center in patient and family support and in the care and evaluation of MS patients.

"We worked to create the Center so people with MS will have access to the most up-to-date treatments available," Dr. Edwards said. "So much research is under way, and so many new therapies are under development. The MS Center of Northeastern New York is the gateway for people living with MS to that research and those therapies."

Dr. Edwards is an Assistant Clinical Professor of Neurology at Harvard Medical School and a Consulting Neurologist at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston. He earned his medical degree from Duke Medical School, Durham, NC, and completed a medical internship at Boston City Hospital and a neurology residency at the University of Vermont School of Medicine. Dr. Edwards is on the Affiliated Medical Staff at Ellis Hospital in Schenectady.
