Advanced Audiology Services
Troy Medical Plaza, downtown Troy
Patients often ask, “Can I get just one hearing aid?” I answer by saying that we function best when both ears are working for us, as nature intended.
Unfortunately, not everyone can enjoy the benefits of listening with two ears. Sometimes the hearing loss in one ear is so great that a hearing aid is of no value. Sometimes an ear is prone to middle-ear infections and the use of a hearing aid only exacerbates the condition. Sometimes the way an ear processes sound is so poor that what is heard is basically garble and of no benefit for communication. However, when both ears are capable of benefiting from the use of a hearing aid, then two hearing aids are always recommended.
Still, what are the benefits of using two hearing aids? One of the most obvious advantages is greater accuracy in telling where sound is coming from. If everything is being heard by just one ear, it is extremely difficult to tell where a sound came from. One ear might serve adequately under quiet, face-to-face conditions; but make the listening situation more complex, throw in noise or have several people talking simultaneously, then the person relying on a hearing aid in just one ear is in an impossible situation. The use of two hearing aids creates a psychological sense of being balanced and reduces the need for the volume of either hearing aid to be set as high as only one hearing aid would require.

Umbrella of Colonie, a home maintenance program of Colonie Senior Service Centers, helps to make that wish come true. Umbrella of Colonie is specifically designed to help seniors maintain their independence in their own home.
Safety is Umbrella’s number one priority, and membership includes a 17-point Home Safety Inspection to ensure the home is safe. With Umbrella, help with all kinds of home maintenance needs is just a phone call away.
In addition to helping seniors stay in their homes, Umbrella of Colonie raises money each year to help its members and other income-challenged seniors with high heating bills, and to provide financial assistance for home repairs. The success of this effort, the Warmth of Wine, is possible because of the respect our community has for its seniors and the generosity of the business community.
